Wagtails

Intent

At Cotton End Forest School, we are committed to providing a knowledge-based curriculum which is linked to ‘Learning Beyond the Classroom’ opportunities. This approach is hands-on, broad and balanced, and provides our pupils with opportunities to gain essential knowledge, skills and understanding. We intend that all children should enjoy their learning, achieve their potential and become independent life-long learners with skills which will allow them to meet the challenges of the 21st century..

Through a creative, holistic, outdoor-focused approach, we will aim high, striving for every child to achieve highly, both academically and socially. Through learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond, including Forest School, our curriculum will nurture curious minds, stretch imaginations and provide opportunities for every child to become leaders in their own right. We believe that education takes place beyond the walls of the classroom, and we utilise our outdoor space to promote a fully inclusive environment where children feel safe and confident to try new things.

Welcome to Wagtails Class!

Wagtails is our Key Stage 1 class for children in Year 1. Wagtails Class is taught by Mrs Sohanpal.

We enjoy a creative approach to our learning where all of the children’s needs are catered for.

In Wagtails class we begin to develop the skill of working independently and children are encouraged to find things out for themselves and to challenge and extend their ideas.

The children learn through a range of hands on, practical tasks as well as more formal written activities. We link our learning objectives to our high quality termly themes and the children immerse themselves in their learning.

Some important information:

Homework is sent home in the children’s learning logs on Friday. It is due back into school the following Wednesday.

Please ensure your child has a PE kit in school which includes sensible footwear. PE lessons take place on a Thursday afternoon.

Wagtails Class go to Forest School on Thursday mornings. Please also ensure your child has their waterproof trousers and wellies in school at all times so we can take part in outdoor learning in all weathers.

Learning about campfire safety.

In the Autumn term, Year one enjoyed learning about the campfire safety, before toasting brioche rolls. They also learnt how to use tools safely, such as the bow saw, and made vegetable characters and Christmas decorations. The children we also really good at using natural resources to create wonderful pieces of art work. We cannot wait to explore our Forest School more and learn even more new skills in the Spring term.
